Acorn Wrestlers Win Regionals & Statebound
Ouachita River School District Acorn High School hosted the 5A South Regional Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at the Acorn Gymnasium.
The Acorn Wrestling Lady Tigers competed strong, placing top in regionals and all three will be representing Acorn Wrestling at the State Tournament on February 24 & 25, 2023. Shay Allen won her match and placed as Regional Champion in her classification. Emery Jai Anderson won both of her matches and placed as Regional Champion in her classification. Emma Arnold lost her match and placed Runner-Up in her classification. The Acorn Wrestling Lady Tigers Team placed 3rd in the 5A South Regionals!
Coach Andy Arnold stated, “We are so proud of their hard work this year and we look forward to their success at State!!! - Go Tigers!!”

Bohlman Selected 2023 DMESC Rural Education Teacher of the Year
Ouachita River School District is pleased to announce Mrs. Amanda Bohlman, Acorn Elementary School First Grade Teacher was selected as the 2023 DeQueen/Mena Education Service Cooperative (DMESC) Rural Education Teacher of the Year! DMESC selected Mrs. Bohlman for her outstanding instruction, teacher leadership and consistency in the classroom. Her name has also been submitted to the Arkansas Rural Education Association (AREA) for consideration for the state-wide teacher of the year.
On Friday, February 10th, Acorn Schools made the announcement to Mrs. Bohlman and the student body. “We are very proud of Mrs. Bohlman. She is a great, caring, and effective teacher” stated Mr. Jerrall Strasner, ORSD Superintendent. “It is a privilege and an honor to work with Mrs. Bohlman. She pours her heart into teaching, designing lessons that are educational, engaging, interactive, and fun. She loves her students, and they love her! We are truly blessed that she is part of our ORSD family!”, stated Mrs. Beth Jackson, Acorn Elementary School Principal.
Mrs. Amanda Bohlman shared a quote, “When asked what makes a great teacher, I would say student/family relationships, flexibility, positive attitude, and great colleagues! Thank you for this award, I am truly honored!”

Acorn Student Matthew Stout Wins Gold
On February 10th, the Special Olympics Arkansas Winter Games kicked off in Springdale, Arkansas with over 500 to 1000 athletes competing in the games. This year’s games included Floor Hockey and Floorball.
Competing on the Area 17 Special Olympics Team for Unified Floorball included Matthew Stout and his father, Steven Stout. Out of fourteen (14) teams competing, Area 17 won gold!
Matthew is a member of the Special Olympics Arkansas Youth Activation Committee. Both Matthew and Steven will be speakers at the upcoming Law Enforcement Torch Run Committee Meeting.

The Acorn Junior High Quiz Bowl team competed at the 2A Regional Quiz Bowl tournament today. There were 7 teams from our region that competed and Acorn placed 2nd place! They qualified for the State Quiz Bowl Tournament. Team members include: Zane Newton (not pictured), Ty Kesterson, Clay McGee, Lauren Cruz, Nick Hicks, Matilda Grant, and Taylar Kesterson.
Zane Newton received All Star Player and earned the honor of participating on the Junior High All Star Quiz Bowl Team. Zane also earned the honor of regional tournament MVP for being the highest scoring player for the entire regional tournament.

On Thursday, February 9th, DeQueen/Mena Education Service Cooperative and DeQueen High School hosted an ACT Prep video/livestream session with John Baylor with the ON TO COLLEGE ACT Prep Program. Area high schools were invited to participate in the session at DeQueen High School in-person or through video/livestream session.
Acorn High School Juniors participated through video/livestream and gained valuable information and strategies to prepare and better prepare for future ACT testing. High school students enrolled at Ouachita River School District Acorn and Oden campuses have access to ON TO COLLEGE ACT Prep Program at no charge to students.
