Their harvesting methods helped maintain the integrity of the plants so that they will continue to produce another round of produce. Acorn Tigers Class AA State XC Race Results ACORN SR. BOYS CROSS COUNTRY BACK-TO-BACK CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONS The Acorn Tigers defended their 2020 State Championship, taking the 2021 Class AA State Cross Country Championships held at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs on Thursday, November 5, 2021. The Tigers entered the race trying to defend last year’s championship. They were ranked 2nd all year to the #1 seat, Quitman Bulldogs and fell to third behind Melbourne. Entering the race, Acorn senior Justice Neufeld had been dominating the cross country races this fall and was ranked the top runner in Class AA and one of the top runners in the State. The race was held on a perfect fall day. The race started with Acorn’s senior Justice Neufeld taking the lead at the gun and was never challenged on the hilly 5k course. He ran a course best in 16:48.95...the race was for the team title. Quitman and Melbourne took an early lead in the team race. At the halfway mark Acorn junior Isaac Tedder, seniors: Damian Bohlman, Jake Lyle and freshman Caden Tarkinton were moving up fast. With one mile to go they were poised to move past the competition, and took the race all the way through to the finish with all five racers in the top 15. After Neufeld, Tedder came up with a personal best in 18:04.7 for 8th place, followed by Caden Tarkington in 10th place with a time of 18: 29.4, Bohlman 13th with a time of 18:56. .10 and Jake Lyle 14th with a time of 19:01.14. All five with their personal best run on race day. The next group of Acorn runners were led by junior Sky Carmack in 31st place, sophomores: Noah Holland in 44th place and Reed McGee in 49th place, all running their personal best. Senior Riley Weddle in 78th place. Justice Neufeld, Isaac Tedder and Caden Tarkinton were also named to the All-State Team. This race was Acorn's 6th State Cross Country title. Justice Neufeld will be representing Acorn and Arkansas in the Arkansas-Oklahoma All-Star Meet to be held at Rogers High School on Saturday, November 13, 2021. Isaac Tedder, Caden Tarkinton and Sky Carmack were invited to the River Valley All-Star race to be held in Mansfield on Saturday, November 13, 2021. The best individual race of the day was in Class AA Senior Girls competitions. Miriam Garcia, Oden High School exchange student from Spain running for Acorn, ran in her first cross country season this year. She battled with the defending champion and came up just a little short in a fantastic run for 2nd place with a personal best time of 20:29.22. Miriam was named to the All-Star team. Running second for Acorn was Bella Tedder with a time of 22:37.44 for 13th place. Both Miriam and Bella will represent Acorn in the River Valley All-Star meet to be held at Mansfield on November 13, 2021. Finishing 3rd for Acorn was sophomore Sophie Strasner and 4th for Acorn was junior Blanca Sanchez, exchange student from Spain.

I am so excited to be back home! I graduated from Acorn, and have looked forward to the day I could return. I have taught a total of thirteen years. Two of those years I taught at Van-Cove as a P.E. Teacher, G/T Coordinator, Assistant Boys Basketball, and Girls Softball Coach. I taught adult GED classes for two years for RMCC. Most recently, I coached volleyball, track and taught P.E. at Waldron Schools for nine years. I love anything outdoors with my family. We camp and play at the lake as often as possible. I place my faith first, and truly believe this is exactly where I need to be. I look forward to the opportunity to teach and get to know these kids!

My name is Kelly Slaten and I am so excited to join the AHS staff as the 10th-12th grade English instructor this year! I was born and raised in Waldron, and earned my BS in English Education from Williams Baptist University in Walnut Ridge, AR. I now live in Waldron with my wonderful husband, Jeremy, and our two amazing children, AbiGail and Elijah. After a year at home tutoring virtual learners (including my own kids), we are all glad to be back to on-site learning/teaching. I have 9 years teaching experience, primarily in the great state of Texas. My passions are connecting great themes of literature to my students’ everyday lives, and helping students develop their written and oral communication skills. The more staff and leadership I meet at ORSD, the more confident I am that this is a caring and professional school, with student learning and growth being the primary focus. Our family loves camping, fishing, swimming, and animals. We are involved in our local 4-H, Southside Baptist Church, Tae Kwon Do at Wolf Pack Martial Arts, and our local fishing team, The Water Dogs! We are looking forward to getting to know the Acorn community better as school begins in August. Go Tigers!

~Acorn Elementary~ Just a friendly reminder that tomorrow is test day. Tomorrow through Thursday your child will be taking ACT® Aspire® assessments for 3rd-6th. The valuable data we gain from these assessments allows us to make evidence based decisions when addressing your child’s strengths, areas for improvement, and growth potential. This can give you an early indication of his or her likely readiness for the future, providing time to address areas where improvement is needed. Important things to remember for this week’s testing: • Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep the night before the tests. • Have your child at school on time. • Make sure your child has a nutritional breakfast. • Encourage your child not to stress about this test, but to try their hardest to show what they have learned this school year.

ORSD: CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) is launching a national communication initiative, “Protect Young People from E-Cigarettes,” to educate staff working in school settings about the risks of youth e-cigarette use. Youth e-cigarette use remains a public health concern. In 2020, nearly 1 in 5 high school students and 1 in 20 middle school students reported current use of e-cigarettes. E-cigarette use among youth is unsafe. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm adolescent brain development. E-cigarettes come in many different shapes, sizes, and colors, some of which are easy to hide. Visit cdc.gov/e-cigarettes for additional information and resources about youth e-cigarette use.

This decision is in light of the recent announcement by the Governor to lift the mask mandate across Arkansas. ORSD will monitor all safety protocols and continue to receive guidance from the Arkansas Department of Health. We are grateful that the positive Covid-19 cases have drastically declined in our communities. **Acorn High School Announcement* The Ouachita River School District supports all students through its mission to provide a safe, caring environment where everyone learns and grows in order to be prepared for life. A key component of the District’s mission is to participate in and provide assessments that support students’ learning, growth, and transitions. Assessment, in general, means a procedure that is utilized to collect data or information about an individual and/or group to make informed decisions. Assessments can include, but are not limited to, screenings and in-depth assessments. The assessment process includes four important steps: 1) identify the problem, 2) select and implement assessment methods, 3) evaluate assessment information, and 4) report assessment results and make appropriate recommendations and/or referrals. The upcoming state-mandated assessment your child will be participating in is the ACT Aspire, which measures English, math, reading, science, and writing academic achievement administered to high school students in grades 7 through 10. You are an important member of the collaborative team and partnership in your child’s experience at Ouachita River School District. One of the ways to help support your child’s experience and success on interim and annual assessments is to be informed about the assessment tool and how to be better prepared during the testing period. The ACT Aspire assessments align your child’s academic growth and readiness with their career goals. The interim or practice assessments are being given this spring in preparation for the annual ACT Aspire assessments. The annual ACT Aspire assessments will be given April 13-15, 2021 on the AHS campus. Students in grades 7-10 will need to be ON CAMPUS for the tests administered April 13-15. Testing will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. each testing day. STUDENTS MUST BRING THEIR CHROMEBOOK and CHROMEBOOK CHARGER to school each day for testing. The testing schedule will be as follows: Tuesday, April 13 8:00 - 10:30 AM Reading & English Wednesday, April 14 8:00 - 10:15 AM Science & Writing Thursday, April 15 8:00 - 9:45 AM Math Just a few tips to make this assessment experience the best it can be for your child: Bring Chromebook to school campus each day, FULLY CHARGED and make sure both Chromebook and charger are brought to school each test day. Please remind your child to get plenty of rest the night before the test. ACT Aspire is a timed test. Be careful not to spend too much time on one question. Go back and review the test if you finish and have time to spare. You can find additional information about ACT Aspire assessment on the following website at https://www.discoveractaspire.org and please feel free to contact me if you have questions or need my assistance. ORSD Family, Today the Governor lifted the mask mandate across Arkansas. The Arkansas Department of Education has directed schools to meet two conditions before discontinuing the use of masks. First, the ORSD Ready for Learning Committee must meet and re-evaluate our safety measures given the Governor's announcement. Second, the ORSD School Board must meet and approve the safety recommendations of the Ready for Learning Committee. Until then, all students, teachers, and staff must continue to wear their masks at school. We will update you as more information is available. Respectfully, Jerrall Strasner Superintendent

Oden Campus Parents, Families and Community Members: Every year, each public school and district in Arkansas receives a Report Card. Just as each student’s report card shows his/her progress in specific subjects, the School Report Card shows how our school is performing in different areas. This user-friendly information is available at https://myschoolinfo.arkansas.gov/SRC/30/5706009. The goal of the Report Card is to provide transparent and accessible information to parents, families, and the community all in one place. In the 2019-2020 school year, events related to COVID-19 caused a substantial disruption to on-site instruction, assessment, accountability, and reporting. Because of these events, some items typically included in accountability and reporting are not available. Although COVID-19 has made substantial interruptions, the work of our learning communities continues. The global pandemic interrupted not only our nation’s health, but it interrupted our educational system. In the 2019-2020 school year, Arkansas’ students did not participate in high stakes testing. The lack of assessment data allows us to view accountability through other lenses that support student achievement. Please take note of our Graduation Rates. The staff, students, and community has worked hard to help each student achieve high school graduation status. Oden K-12 Schools is grateful for your continued support. If you have questions about the Report Card, please visit the My School Info website https://myschoolinfo.arkansas.gov/SRC to find more information, definitions of terms, videos which explain how the site works, and answers to frequently asked questions. If you would like to become involved in school improvement activities, or would like to know more about the information in our school report card, please contact us at 870-326-4311.
